2018-19 Winter Sport Recap
A successful 2018-19 winter season concluded last night for Central Baptist College Athletics with Percell Washington playing in the NAIA All-Star Game in Kansas City. Washington was one of the many stories that highlighted the winter sports season at CBC.
Washington and the men’s basketball played in the NAIA National Tournament for the second straight year after winning their first American Midwest Conference Championship on March 5 against Park University. Their opponent was #2 LSU-Alexandria. The Mustangs fought hard, but ended up losing 81-74 to conclude the first year under head coach Clint Galyean at 22-11, the most successful first year of any head coach in Mustang history. Washington, Victor Dukes and Jalen Adams were all selected for all-conference teams, while Jordan Ford, Marcel Swinton and Demond White were selected to the all-academic team for the AMC. Washington also scored 12 points and two rebounds in the NAIA All-Star Game, helping the West team win 111-107.
Women’s basketball made history as well, winning more games than any other team in program history, 17, and playing in the AMC tournament for the first time ever. Holly Allen had one of the best statistical seasons ever, highlighted by her 373 points, the fourth most ever in women’s basketball history in a single-season. The highlight of the season came on Valentine’s Day, when the Mustangs went to Columbia, Mo., and beat #1 Columbia College 52-50. Allen earned AMC honorable mention honors and Alexis Augustus was named to the AMC’s third team. Kory Westerman, Kendra Cummings and Allen were all selected for the AMC All-Academic team.
Wrestling had an up-and-down season, hosting the Mustang Invitational and placing in several events. Jeff Williams, Ben Freeman and Matt Jones had the best seasons for the wrestling team, highlighted by Williams’ second place finish in the 133-pound weight class at the Mustang Invitational.
It was a successful winter season for the Mustangs and they are making even more history this Spring. Be sure to keep up with the Mustangs by liking Central Baptist College Athletics on Facebook and following @gocbcmustangs on Twitter and Instagram.
