CBC Alumni Stories
My name is Joel Greene. I was born and raised in Lufkin Texas and the son of a Baptist Missionary Association of America (BMA) pastor.
A Different Direction
Being a part of a family that played a public roll, I was taught and groomed to interact with people. I have always enjoyed connecting through relationships and wanted a career that allowed for making deep connections with people. Many encouraged me to follow my dad’s path and go into ministry, but God wasn’t leading me into a ministry career within the church. From the beginning of high school, I felt that God had directed my path towards becoming a Physical Therapist. Logically, I had always thought I would attend a public university in Texas. Specifically, I thought I would more than likely end up at Texas A & M. However, as God often does, he guided my steps in a different direction.
My Path to CBC
In fall of 1994, my senior year of high school, my dad had been invited to speak at a student conference/revival meeting at CBC. During the week he was there, he would eat each meal with the students on campus, getting to know them. He watched them interact with their professors and with each other. He was so impressed with the school and students. He was seeing a place that offered a great education, spiritual growth and investment, and students that were bound together with a mutual desire to know our God. When he returned home, he encouraged me to investigate it, thinking it might be a good fit for me. And it was! After making two visits to CBC, it became clear to me that this was the place God wanted me to start my college career.
A Perfect Transition for Me
From the fall of 1995 through the spring of 1997, I attended CBC, working on my prerequisites to enter the physical therapy program at the University of Central Arkansas. My transition to college life was tougher than expected. The smaller CBC campus and the ability to be known by my professors was more important than I realized. My time at CBC was a perfect transition for me from my parent’s home to independent living and from high school academics to the demands of college curriculum. After those 2 years, I transitioned to the University of Central Arkansas and completed my remaining prerequisites to physical therapy school. I was able to apply to the Physical Therapy program and was accepted on my first attempt!
My years at CBC were some of the most influential and precious years of my life. Life changing events happened on this campus. I met a beautiful, godly woman from Oklahoma that God had also led to CBC, and she would eventually become my wife. I also met a community of students that would become some of my life-long best friends. CBC would also be that pivotal start to my collegiate studies that would eventually lead to my licensure as a Physical Therapist, and ultimately to my management career in Oklahoma City at OU Medical Center and The Children’s Hospital. CBC is a place that God uses to encourage, shape, and equip. It was more than just a college experience for me…it was an important tool God used to make my life what he wanted it to be.
