The sports season at Central Baptist College began on August 21, when the men’s soccer team played LSU-Shreveport in North Little Rock. Since that point, all the fall sports have started and the seasons have been active so far.
Men’s soccer picked up their first win against Williams Baptist, while the women’s team is still searching for their first victory. Despite the slow starts, both coach Carnahan and coach Murphy are confident that their programs will turn things around. Both teams began American Midwest Conference play over the weekend of the 15th and 16th, and will continue AMC play throughout the rest of the season. Volleyball is off to an 8-5 start to the year, including winning their first four matches. Head coach Shatel Gaines knows that her team is young, but with each match and each win, they build confidence and chemistry. Cross Country has run three meets so far this season, including this past weekend at the Southern Stampede in Joplin, Mo, their first meet where they were eligible to qualify for national meets. Men’s Golf has played three tournaments this season and have already had an individual winner in Colton Ryan at the NCCAA Central Regional while finishing second as a team in the same tournament.
A significant contributor to the women’s soccer team has been freshman goalkeeper Sara Calzada from Arlington, Texas. Calzada has already posted four double-digit save matches this season and leads the AMC in saves and sits second in the NAIA in that category. When asked what brought her to CBC, Calzada replied “I loved being here on campus. I enjoyed being recruited by the coaches. I loved the faith based nature of the school and that it was private. I wanted to come make a difference in the soccer program.”
